Challenge Description

What is not possible / not adequately addressed at present?

Mapping land cover and land class classification is needed, but methods can be highly variable between different contractors. Obtaining up to date and standardized land cover information is a challenge.

What effect does this challenge have on operations?

Baseline land cover and land use information is required to understand project environment and to support environmental risk assessment.

Thematic information requirements:

Land cover

Land use

What do you currently do to address this challenge?

How is this challenge conventionally addressed?

Combination of available satellite imagery in combination with aerial imagery.

What kind of solutions do you envisage could address this challenge?

Baseline information based on optical image acquisition and an ability to integrate radar data to mitigate cloud cover issues in optical data.

What is your view on the capability of technology to meet this need?

Are you currently using EO tech? If not, why not?

Issues regarding consistency and accuracy of land cover classification and change detection, cost of data, and cloud cover constraints in certain parts of the world.
