In order for any construction to take place, a developer must ensure the ground on which the development is to take place is structurally competent and will not be susceptible to subsidence or collapse.  It will therefore be necessary to carry out a geotechnical assessment before any construction is carried out.  Once the assessment is complete, remedial action may be taken and further assessment may be required thereafter.  Following the completion of all construction the buildings will then be monitored for structural stability.  Subsidence monitoring around the mine site will also take place for underground mines.
