In the aftermath of an incident, the insurance provider may hire external resources to conduct an investigation into the causes of the incident. The use of earth observational data can provide critical insights into the causes by providing detailed information on the environmental conditions leading up to and following the incidents. Data regarding sea ice and weather patterns can be used to identify anomalies or hazards leading up to the event which may have impacted the vessel and crew’s behavior. When used in conjunction with other types of evidence such as AIS and communication logs Earth observation data may help to build a more complete picture of the events preceding and following an incident and help resolve insurance claims.
