European mining companies are required to specifically identify and assess how their operations might impact on sensitive areas, for example specific SAC's (Special Areas of Conservation) as prescribed by Natura 2000.

National monuments and areas of cultural and/or heritage value may be sensitive to damage by mining activities.  These may need to be identified / assessed / avoided / removed / protected, depending on the nature and importance of the monument.
