Flora and fauna are the sensitive receptors that may be impacted by mining activities.  It is necessary to understand the baseline conditions (what is the species diversity, what is the species population, and are there any endangered species).  These data will be used to impose conditions on the mining operation during its operation and may also be used to establish what the rehabilitation criteria might be.

Surveys will need to be completed by the developer.  Surveys include logging numbers and species diversity (e.g. fish surveys & benthic population for water bodies / population counts for animals / flora counts).

A once off assessment will be required for flora and fauna as part of the permitting process.  However, it will be necessary to carry out multiple assessments over a 12-month period to properly assess this geoinformation parameter.  Populations of flora and fauna are subject to change over the year (with certain fauna species migrating and therefore will not be present all year around).
