What data/products do you use? |
Nea= r real-time ocean surface current data are available via NOAA (NDBC)= Surface currents derived from satellite =

br>Regional forecast models: |
When do you use this kind of dataset? |
The=
se data are used to monitor all day-to-day operations when drilling, survey=
ing etc. To assess the current conditions, nowcasting, assess the quality f=
orecast models and plan ahead. Find windows of operability etc. |
What are your actual limitations and do y= ou have a work around? |
Dat=
a availability is the major issue. Few measurements of sufficient quality e=
xist. |
Needs and expectations on EO data<= /p> |
EO =
is used for this today, but resolution, update frequency and quality is not=
sufficient. Increasingly used as assimilation into models. More severe sit=
uations (for instance eddies/loop current) can be detected using these data=
real time, however the use for point forecasting is limited. |

Update frequency |
Rea=
l-time and near real-time. Hourly, or 10 minutes averaged over 1 hour (beca=
use of noise). |
Temporal resolution |
Sur=
face-based observation: sub-hourly to less frequently |
Spatial resolution |
Obs=
ervation on location or around 4 km (maybe less in coastal areas). <=
br> |
Data quality |
The= selected sources in this document are selected because they are known to h= ave sufficient quality (after some work around/adaptation). In general sepa= rate indepth verification studies has to be made for each source planned to= be used for analysis, and the analysis has to be repeated for each geograp= hical area (since sources might be of sufficient quality in one area but no= t another). |
Data Coverage and extent |
Reg= ional and as localized as possible. |
Example format |
net= CDF and/or CSV |
Timeliness |
Rea= l-time or near real-time. Forecasts are normally issued 2 to 4 times per da= y, but industry requires continuous monitoring of conditions. |
