Rationale

EO4GEO- Towards and innovative strategy for skills development and capacity building in the space geo-information sector supporting Copernicus user uptake is an Erasmus+ Sector Skills Alliance gathering 26 partners (and initially 22 associated partners, looking forward to new adhesions) from 16 countries from academia, private and public sector active in the education/training and space/geospatial sectors. It is coordinated by the Association GISIG (www.gisig.eu) and will run over four years, starting from 1st January 2018.

EO4GEO aims to help bridging the skills gap between supply and demand of education and training in the space/geospatial sector by reinforcing the existing ecosystem and fostering the uptake and integration of space/geospatial data and services in end-user applications. EO4GEO will work in an multi- and interdisciplinary way and apply innovative solutions for its education and training actions including: case based and collaborative learning scenarios; learning-while-doing in a living lab environment; on-the-job training; the co-creation of knowledge, skills and competencies; etc.

Benefits

In order to reinforce the existing ecosystem and to foster the uptake and integration of space/geospatial data and services in end-users applications, EO4GEO will define a long-term and sustainable strategy taking into account the current and expected technological and non-technological developments in the concerned sectors.

Amongst the actions to be implemented in this context, one can mention:

  • the creation and the regular update of an ontology-based body of knowledge for the space/geospatial sector;
  • the development of a dynamic collaborative platform;
  • the organisation of a series of training actions in three sub-sectors (integrated applications, smart cities and climate change) to test and validate the approach.

  • The key value for the industry: The main objective of EO4GEO is to help to bridge the skills gap between supply and demand of education and training in the EO/GI sector by reinforcing the existing ecosystem and fostering the uptake and integration of space/geospatial data and services in end-user applications. EO4GEO aims to help the sector find workers with the right skills and ensuring that they acquire the competences they need to find jobs. This is key to sector economic innovation, growth and competitiveness. Demand for professional skills can be identified and stimulated, both supporting the drivers of and removing the barriers to long-term sustainable skills strategy. It will also provide clarification on skills, competences, duties, knowledge on the recruitment process. The strategy is implemented through several actions: the development and maintenance of an ontology-based Body of Knowledge (BoK) for the sector; the design and development of a series of curricula and a rich portfolio of training modules directly usable in the context of Copernicus and the organisation of a series of training actions for a selected set of scenarios in three sub-sectors - integrated applications, smart cities and climate change to test and validate the approach.

  • The next milestone: Sector Skills Strategy deliverable (April 2019). The deliverable is planned to be discussed with DG-GROW and DG-EMPL

  • The needs of the sector are constantly evolving, and we believe that helping the industry to find workers with the right skills and ensuring that they acquire the skills they need to find productive employment is key to the sector economic innovation, growth and competitiveness, therefore EO4GEO aims to define a long-term and sustainable strategy to fill the gap between supply of and demand for the EO/GI education and training.   • The Skills Intelligence will provide a comprehensive and user friendly information, data, facts, analysis and interpretation about the past, present or future skill needs in the (G)EO sector.
  • Demand for professional skills can be identified and stimulated, both supporting the drivers of and removing the barriers to long-term sustainable skills strategy. Learning if the current workplace ensures that skills developed are relevant companies needs:
    • Opportunity to train new employees, permanently educate the others, integration with new skillsets;
