EVOSS is situated downstream from GMES Core Services to be provided by the preliminary GMES projects PREVIEW, and its successor SAFER. It uses newly developed space technology to optimize volcano monitoring capacity in Europe, Africa and lesser Antilles, and exploits the synergetic potential of Radar and InfraRed observation from platforms in Polar and Geostationary orbits.
EVOSS capitalizes on 12 years of expertise gathered by the Partners on multi-method technological approaches to space-based volcano monitoring performed mainly in the following EC and ESA funded projects: TEKVOLC (1996-1998 EC contract no. ENV4-CT96-0251); Monitoring active deformation of volcanoes by Interferometry as an Early Warning System (1996-1998, EC contract no. ENV4-CT96-0294); European Mobile Early Warning System (1998-2000, EC Contract no. ENV4-CT98-0728), MINERVA (2001-2003, ESA Data User Programme), TEMIS (2002-2009, ESA - Data User Element); GlobVOLCANO (2007-2009, ESA - Data User Element), PROMOTE (2007-2009, ESA - GMES Service Element).
